Death And Recovery

Death in Mazes and Monsters is meant to be a setback, not the end of a standard character's adventure.

You are never forcefully sent to the Underworld when you die.

Praetoseba, the Underworld, is a place you may choose to enter through the appropriate portal. Death does not send you there. If you die while already in Praetoseba, you recover there without the normal death penalty.

  1. Your character becomes a ghost and leaves a corpse where you died.
  2. Another player may use Raise Dead on your corpse or carry your corpse to an NPC priest for resurrection.
  3. If nobody resurrects you, the Ghods will recover you after a short wait.
  4. Ghod recovery returns you to the current area's resurrection point with very little health.

You can also leave the game while you are a ghost. The game resolves your recovery before returning you to conference.

Death does not remove character experience or skill progress.

Depending on how you are returned to life, you may lose attribute points, maximum hit points, or maximum stamina. Some characters and resurrection methods receive protection from some or all of these penalties.

These losses can be recovered with the appropriate stat potions, subject to the normal limits for your character.

A normal Ghod release does not remove your gear or equipment. Your carried and worn belongings are separated from you only if another character loots your corpse before you are released. In that case, the belongings are placed on the ground where you died and may need to be recovered.

If your corpse is not looted before release, your normal belongings remain with your character. Special deaths and items with their own death-related properties can behave differently.

Hardcore characters are an explicit exception to the standard recovery rules. A Hardcore character can be permanently released when death reaches a Ghod recovery or release. This is permadeath, not a forced trip to the Underworld.

  1. Standard characters recover from death and are never forced into the Underworld.
  2. Death never removes experience or skill progress.
  3. Recovery may cause attribute, maximum hit point, or maximum stamina loss.
  4. A normal release preserves your belongings unless your corpse was looted first.
